TriMet driver takes action after spotting child in roadway

PORTLAND, Ore. – A sharp-eyed TriMet driver said it was second nature to stop and help after he spotted a small child in the road Tuesday morning.

Richard Silverman, a 15-year veteran, said he was turning the corner near Northeast 82nd and Killingsworth Street when he saw something in the road and realized a small child was in the street. It was raining at the time.

Silverman turned his bus to block the road and stop traffic while a passenger hopped off, scooped the little girl up and put her on the bus.

The unidentified toddler was soaking wet but otherwise uninjured. “A couple of minutes later, the mother showed up and was totally distraught and very happy to see her little one,” Silverman told KATU News.

Silverman, who is a father himself, said he hadn’t seen anything like it in his long driving career with the transit agency but said he was sure anyone else would have done the same thing.
