Commissioner: Smart "call" is to recycle old cell phones

Every year, citizens of the U.S. needlessly toss thousands of old cell phones, pagers, smart phones, and MP3 players into the garbage.  And according to the Environmental Protection Agency, these out-of-date tech gadgets contain toxic metals and other materials - such as lead, chromium VI, and brominated flame retardants - that can pollute ground water and the air we breath.

These environmental concerns have sparked the Multnomah County Commissioners office to create recycling boxes in several convenient Portland locations in an effort to reduce this technology waste.

Recycling boxes are in the following county locations: Central Library, Midland Library, Multnomah County East building and Multnomah building.

City approves 'Treebate' program

Starting today, if you plant a tree you can get as much as $50 off your utility bill.  It's part of the Bureau of Environmental Services' new Treebate program that the city approved Wednesday morning.

Mature trees help suck up hundreds of gallons of rainwater every year, reducing the strain on sewers and local rivers and streams.

The City Council enacted the rule effective immediately because we are entering the best time of the year to plant trees.

'Treebate' program on City Council's agenda

The City Council is slated to decide on Wednesday whether property owners should get a rebate for planting more trees.

It's part of the Bureau of Environmental Services' new Treebate program.

So why are they so hot on people planting new trees?

Mature trees help suck up hundreds of gallons of rainwater every year, reducing the amount that flows into storm drains and into local rivers and streams.

If the City Council approves the new program, we are told it will go into effect immediately.

Storm drains fill on Sandy Boulevard

A worker at the Hollywood Liquor store at Northeast 38th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard cleans the storm drains on Saturday after a spot of heavy rains.

According to KATU.com, city workers are telling Portlanders that it's their job to keep the streets clean, so I thought this picture was timely. Here's a link to the story: http://www.katu.com/news/local/64679092.html

The roar of F-15s... some love it, some hate it

I live near the airport and often hear planes overhead and the roar of F-15s that fly in and out of the area.

Having lived in Northeast Portland for the past decade, I've gotten used to it - it's all background noise to me. And to be honest, I love the sound an F-15 makes as it flies over my house.  I normally never see them, but I can feel and hear them up there.

But some folks understandably have issues with it.

The Sumner Association of Neighbors blog has some good information about a recently approved Oregon Air National Guard descent plan and how folks can voice their concerns about the noise.

It's definitely worth a look if this is a major concern for you.

It's kind of hard to miss that giant crane ...

What's up with the giant crane in NE Portland?

I first spotted it coming over the Fremont Bridge. Then I saw the construction (no, it's not another round of trendy condos going up).

It's for the kids!

Turns out Legacy Emanuel is getting a new home for their Pediatrics unit.

There you have it. Mystery solved.
