Doors close on The Sentinel's print edition

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Sentinel printed its final street edition this month, becoming the latest newspaper to fold under hard economic times.

For several years, The Sentinel has been a source of news and information for inner Northeast Portland, North Portland and as far northwest as Sauvie Island.

Now the print edition is no more and the future of the online version of the newspaper remains in the air.

Publisher Cornelius Swart said the response from the community about the demise of the newspaper has been pretty overwhelming.

"People really had a great attachment to the service and the voice of the paper," he said. "We've had some advertisers in near tears. We've had some people come to us and ask 'Well how am I going to get out information about the St. John's Parade?' for example."

Police: Arrest made in Alberta St. serial-burglary case

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland police have arrested a man that reportedly fell into their hands while on surveillance.

The man, identified as 47-year-old Matthew C. Flajole, was arrested on his way out from burglarizing a business in the 1800 block of Northeast Alberta Street, police report. They say Flajole was stocked with cash and alcohol.

Flajole has been charged with two burglaries involving businesses on that street.

Portland detectives said they suspect Flajole may be responsible for dozens of burglaries - all over the Portland area - since July 2009. Detectives are continuing the investigate into whether those burglaries can be linked to Flajole.

Officers apprehended Flajole as he was leaving the business near the 1800 block of Northeast Alberta. We're told North Precinct detectives had Flajole "under surveillance at the time of the burglary."

7-Up icon disappears

PORTLAND, Ore. - A longstanding Portland landmark, the 7-Up sign atop the Portland Bottling Co. building at 1321 Northeast Couch Street, has now been covered in advertisements and the iconic bottle that sits on top is now yellow instead of green.

The bottle was painted yellow to advertise Guayaki, an organic beverage that is brewed right here in Portland.

A lot has been going on with the sign in the past few months. Back in October, the bottle was taken down so bearings could be replaced in the 7-Up portion of the sign to get it spinning again. It hadn't rotated in 20 years.

Portlanders are notorious for being very vocal about what happens with iconic signs in the Rose City.

Future of 'Last Thursday' topic of meeting

Officials are meeting Monday night to discuss the future of Last Thursday on Northeast Alberta Street.

The event attracts thousands of people every year during the summer months but in recent years the city had to pay the bill for shutting down 15 blocks to accommodate everyone. So now the city has to decide if it wants to keep Last Thursday going by making significant changes or shut it down completely.

Monday night's meeting will take public opinions. It's being held at the Acadian Ballroom on Alberta from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cameras capture gas station robbery attempt

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police are asking for help in apprehending a suspect following an attempt to rob a gas station Sunday night.

The incident took place at a Shell gas station on Northeast Broadway Street near Interstate 5.

Security cameras captured the scene as a man in a dark hoodie sweatshirt entered the small store at the station and then suddenly reached into the cash drawer while the clerk had it open during a transaction.

No weapon was displayed during the robbery attempt.

The clerk attempts to fight off the man and moments later, a bystander wearing camouflage also scuffles with the suspect.

However, the suspect was able to fight off the clerk and bystander and fled the scene, but not before his image was caught on video. No serious injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as a black male, in his 30s, about 6 foot 2 inches tall and 150 pounds. As seen in the video, he has a bald head.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.

If you recognize the suspect in the video, police ask that you call them immediately.
